The Power of Proactive Health

A survey conducted by the Cleveland Clinic in 2019 revealed 72 percent of men would rather do household chores, like cleaning the bathroom or mowing the lawn, than visit the doctor.  Avoiding routine medical checkups and doctors' visits can put individuals at a higher risk for several health issues, such as heart disease, diabetes, depression and certain cancers. Recognized annually in June, Men’s Health Month is a time to raise awareness of the proactive actions not only men – but all of us can take to address our physical and mental health.

Addressing physical health:

  1. Schedule annual exams. Regular check-ups can help ensure your health is on track and detect problems before they worsen. Worried about cost? If you’re enrolled in a Northrop Grumman Health Plan, preventative care is 100% covered, including annual physicals, eye exams and dental exams. Based on your age, family history and other risk factors, your provider may recommend screenings critical to detecting cancer and other diseases, like a mammogram or colonoscopy.
  1. Get personalized health coaching. Address issues such as diabetes, weight management, stress, sleep, nutrition and any lifestyle-related changes. Anthem members can access health coaching through Vida Health and Kaiser Permanente members can connect with a dedicated wellness coach.
  1. Contact Quantum Health. Your Care Coordinator can help:
    • Review your recommended preventative care.
    • Find an in-network provider near you.
    • Explain treatment options.
    • Confirm your coverage and get preauthorization, if needed.

Addressing mental health:

  1. Learn from experts and leaders who understand. Northrop Grumman offers live and pre-recorded webinars that cover a wide range of mental health topics.
    • Attend a men’s mental health webinar on June 18 at noon ET. Eric Antens, mental health expert and licensed clinician, will share ways men can improve their quality of life by focusing on mental health, and explain how everyone can build resilience and positive mental health.
