When Fern Fleischer-Daves, assistant general counsel for environmental, health and safety, went in for her routine mammogram in August 2023, she didn’t anticipate that doctors would find anything unusual. Even when they requested additional testing, she assumed the best-case scenario. She hadn’t noticed any abnormal symptoms, and she doesn’t have a family history of illness, so she was surprised when doctors diagnosed her with stage 1 breast cancer.
Although her diagnosis was unexpected, Fern is grateful that she prioritized her annual physical and mammogram. “Early diagnosis makes a huge difference with treatment options and outcomes,” she said.
After processing the news, Fern defaulted to research. “For me, information is power and a way to manage my anxiety,” she said. Fern remembered that Northrop Grumman offers a wide array of health benefits, so she visited the Total Rewards Gateway to learn more about the resources available to employees.
Fern turned to Quantum Health Care Coordinators for free, personalized support with insurance approvals and help understanding bills. “I needed a letter of medical necessity from the doctor for surgery, chemotherapy and various treatments. And when I changed hospitals, I needed to resubmit some of the paperwork,” Fern said. Quantum Health made the process easier for her, so she could focus on her care.

Care Coordinators can also direct you to a variety of cancer-related treatments and services, including cosmetic and confidence support, as well as mental health resources.
After calling Quantum Health a few times and speaking with a few Care Coordinators, Fern requested to speak to the same representative every time. She received one Care Coordinator’s contact information and has built a relationship with him over the past year. They check in with each other once a month and communicate via email through Quantum Health’s secure portal between their scheduled calls. Fern appreciates the ability to reach out to him directly, which saves her time and energy, especially when dealing with billing issues.
Fern’s Care Coordinator provided support as she scheduled surgery in 2024, followed by three months of chemotherapy, two weeks of radiation and six months of physical therapy. He helped obtain approval when she changed medications, as well as confirmed insurance coverage for genetic testing, cold-capping treatment to save Fern’s hair, targeted immunotherapy, physical therapy and acupuncture. His assistance even extended to Fern’s family, as he helped her spouse find caregiver counseling support.
Fern encourages all employees to take a proactive stance on their health and familiarize themselves with Northrop Grumman’s resources. “I think about cancer screenings like preventative maintenance on my car, computer or any kind of equipment – you have to make time to do it,” she said.
